Description
As a long-time enthusiast of Roman history and the classical world, I have always been fascinated by the discipline and iconography of the legions. My personal favorite piece of equipment has always been the Scutum—its design isn't just functional; it is a symbol of Roman resilience and tactical genius. I created this set to bring a piece of that history to our modern daily lives.
The Symbols & Their History
This collection consists of four pieces, split between military standards and the shields that protected the empire:
- The Aquila (Imperial Eagle): Inspired by the sacred legionary standards. The Aquila was the very soul of the legion; to lose one was considered a supreme national disgrace.
- SPQR Plaque: Based on the Signum or administrative plaques. "Senatus Populusque Romanus" represents the collective authority of the Senate and the People of Rome.
- The Rectangular Scutum: A representation of the iconic semi-cylindrical shield used by the legionaries, famous for the "Testudo" (tortoise) formation.
- The Circular Shield: Inspired by the Parma or Clipeus, often used by auxiliary troops or cavalry, featuring the winged thunderbolts of Jupiter.
