Description
VENUS DE LESPUGUE, WITH STAND (NON-MAGNETIC)
The Venus de Lespugue is an ivory statuette measuring 14.7 cm, considered one of the most celebrated of the so-called Paleolithic Venuses. It was discovered by René de Saint-Périer, in 1922 by R. de Saint-Périer in the «Rideaux Cave», in Lespugue, a town in the district of Saint-Gaudens, in Haute-Garonne (France).
The statuette was accompanied by clearly lithic and bone Gravettian industry (Noailles burins, split-base spearpoints, smoothers, bone ornaments…). Formerly called Upper Périgordian, now Middle Gravettian with Noailles burins is dated, thanks to this index fossil, to between 26,000 and 24,000 years old.
