Description

Upd. 2026-may-03: Added new fan mounting plate (7g) with 124–126 mm bolt hole spacing and adjusted location of cable window for compatibility with various fan manufacturers.

Modifications from original:

  • more drives - 6 HDD / 2U to 8 HDD / 3U
  • proper clearance for airflow (30.5mm)
  • rear support
  • 140mm fan for cooling

Rear support is 44.5mm and designed to match standard LabRax depth (~240mm). You can adjust support length to your needs by using part on 7f plate which already split onto 3 pieces and you only need to move top part to desired location and scale middle part. Or DM me.

BOM:

  • 8x Dell PowerEdge 3.5" HDD tray
  • 8x SATA-SATA or SATA-SAS adapters
  • 1x 140mm computer fan
  • 16x M3x12 screw (you should use HEX ones to avoid difficulties with mounting SATA adapters)
  • 6x M4x25 screw (body and rear support attachment)
  • 4~8x M4x12~20 (fan panel mount)
  • 4x M4x30~35 screw (depending on fan thickness)
  • 16~24x M6x12 screws (for rack mount)

STEP files are available.

Great idea. Is the rear adapter possibly also available for the 6xHDD version with 2x 80mm fans

I was thinking about using 2x 92mm fans for 6-bay version, as they should be quieter than 80mm fans, but I'll make both versions.

when 92mm fans are not too big, then this will be perfect. I thougt that the 92mm will be too big for the backplate. So i dont think there is need for the 80mm version

Thank you very much for this! I searched for so long, all the other hot-swap racks are either 2-bay or 6-bay, but I needed 8-bay. I was very close to designing one in CAD myself and burying countless hours into it. This is exactly what I imagined: with the support piece and the fan mount, you thought of everything! Thank you! You deserve every Boost Token I have, which is unfortunately only 1, but tomorrow, when I'll hopefully get more, you'll get another one.

Thank you for your kind feedback! I also have almost completed the 6-bay 2.5U and 10-bay 4U versions, which will be available soon.

Cool design! Maybe 120mm variant? It is more common variant of fan.

I need to check if the mounting dimensions for most 120mm fans are correct, and then I'll add it to the print profile.

Great design. A version for the 6-Bay model would be great too - but with 2x 80mm fans then

I'll try to print both the 6- and 10-drive versions this week to be able to upload them.
