Bill of Materials
Description
Imagine waking up in a place you're not familiar with. It's not just bizarre, it is unlike anything you've ever seen. You are completely alienated from this world. The thing is that was how people were feeling when they were introduced to the internet. That was a major challenge for designers, because how could you invite someone stare at a pixelated screen, click on recktangles in a way that is incoherent whit your entire perception of reality. And that how “skeuomorphism” came to be.
Skeuomorphism is a design philosophy that uses utilises real life imagery to make our brains to form connections between abstract concepts and physical concepts. It is primarily used by web designers in the 90's and early 2000's. The trend later faded away in favour of minimalistic and scalable logos, which I think is a shame. Like the previous internet analogy we often forget about the actuality of things that we see everyday. Skeuomorphism makes our brains process the our surroundings under a new light and shows us the true essence of things, in a world that is corporatized, generelized and minimized. As the famous philosopher Mevlana said:
“Either look like what you are or be what you look like”
