Description
Leonardo (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) - High-Fidelity Collectible Statue (Easy to Print)
⚠️ Important note on print quality I would like to emphasize that the final print quality can be significantly influenced by the filament used. I have found that different brands of filaments can have properties (such as rigidity, moisture absorption, and impact resistance) that affect the result, especially in support management for such a dynamic model. Therefore, the success and cleanliness of the print depend not only on the profile (which I have tried to optimize) but also on the quality and specific characteristics of your PLA.
In case of issues such as the extruder touching or breaking supports, I strongly suggest performing a printer calibration. Often, an accurate calibration can resolve many inconveniences, reduce micro-oscillations, and drastically improve the final quality.
The Design Bring the courageous tactical leader of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Leonardo, directly to your desk with this detailed high-fidelity collectible statue!
To fully optimize the printing experience and ensure the best quality, I designed this model by strategically breaking it down.
This choice allows anyone to achieve a clean and super detailed print. I engineered the separation of the main body, the rocky scenic base, the nameplate, and the katanas, using a truncated square pyramid joint for the main components.
This system provides a precise seat for perfect, self-centering alignment and facilitates subsequent gluing. The square base prevents the piece from rotating, while the truncated shape ensures a robust fit without play.
This FDM-friendly approach not only makes the project accessible to everyone but also optimizes print times, reduces material waste, and drastically minimizes the need for complex supports on overhanging parts, preventing damage to sculpted details during removal.
🛠️ Printing and Materials
Separate Parts: The body, weapons (katanas), base, and front lettering are separated for more efficient and cleaner printing. It is recommended to assemble the parts with a bit of glue (cyanoacrylate/super glue) once the dry fits have been tested.
Tolerances and Fits: The project has been tested and calibrated on standard profiles. Since each material has its own thermal and shrinkage tolerance (especially PLA Matte), fits may vary slightly. Particularly for truncated pyramid joints, if they turn out too tight or too loose, it will be enough to minimally "play" with the scale (e.g., 99% or 101%) of the joint piece in the slicer and reprint it to obtain the perfect joint.
Supports: I have optimized the model's volumes to minimize the use of Tree supports. However, for dynamic geometries, I have provided reinforcements. Exercise extreme caution when removing Tree supports (Top Z Distance at 0.24mm to facilitate detachment), pinching and breaking them with flush cutters to avoid damaging finer details, such as fingers or the wind-blown bandana tails. Be careful! The use of precision flush cutters is highly recommended for the supports around the sword handles. ⚠️
- Recommended Finish and Colors: The "chunky" volumes and pronounced details of the model have been specifically designed to enhance post-production. I highly recommend printing the model with a neutral matte filament (e.g., PLA Grey Matte). The porous surface of Matte creates the perfect primer for direct hand-painting with acrylic markers. This technique will allow you to achieve solid and vibrant colors — olive green for the skin, solid cobalt blue for the bandana, and leather brown for the straps — transforming a simple print into an incredible display piece without going crazy with filament changes.
