Description

DIY chest tube trainer designed for practicing thoracostomy and tube thoracostomy placement using a 3D-printed rib structure with a silicone skin overlay.

This model can be used as a standalone trainer or placed over an existing simulator (e.g., Laerdal SimMan 3G) to create a low-cost, repeatable training solution.

The rib model is adapted from an open-source design originally published on Thingiverse model 4018084, which provides a set of ribs specifically intended for chest tube simulation training.

🔥 Why This Trainer Works

  • Realistic rib landmarks for proper placement
  • Silicone skin layer allows incision and blunt dissection practice
  • Reusable and low-cost compared to commercial trainers
  • Can scale easily for group training

🎯 Ideal For

  • Emergency medicine training
  • Surgery and procedural skills labs
  • EMS / paramedic education
  • Simulation centers and GME programs

🧠 Key Features

  • 3D-printed rib cage structure
  • Silicone overlay simulates skin and soft tissue
  • Compatible as an overlay on full-body simulators
  • Supports repeated practice of:
    • Landmark identification
    • Incision
    • Blunt dissection
    • Tube placement

🧰 Materials Needed

  • Printed rib model
  • Platinum-cure silicone (e.g., Ecoflex series)
  • Silicone pigments
  • Flocking (Optional)
  • Mold or casting method for skin layer (baking sheet works perfectly)

🖨️ Printing Notes

  • PLA or PETG recommended
  • Increase wall count for durability
  • Ensure rib surfaces are smooth for realistic feedback

✅ Expected Result

The finished trainer provides realistic rib spacing and tactile feedback for practicing chest tube insertion, including identification of intercostal spaces and controlled dissection.
