A Short Story: The Ultimate Persistence of 'Delicious!'

After completing a difficult mission, Kyojuro Rengoku didn't return directly to headquarters but made a detour to a small eatery called “Heartbeat Noodle Shop.” His booming voice and iconic smile startled both the owner and the customers, but his enthusiasm quickly spread to everyone.

He ordered a large bowl of “Hellishly Spicy Flame Ramen” and insisted that the shop use the spiciest chilies. When the noodles were served, a child at an adjacent table curiously watched this peculiar older brother.

Kyojuro picked up his chopsticks and ate the noodles heartily. With every mouthful, he would loudly exclaim, “Delicious (Umai)!” The sound was so powerful it made the soup in his bowl tremble.

The child at the adjacent table asked, “Big brother, aren’t you bothered by the spice?”

Kyojuro finished his last bite of noodles, wiped his mouth, looked at the child, and displayed a radiant smile that could light up the night sky, as if his unpainted model suddenly gained color: “Spicy? That’s because the flames are burning! As long as you keep a flame in your heart, every difficulty (even super-spicy ramen) is a challenge meant to make you stronger! Come, child, do you want to become as strong as me? Then start by eating well!”

Seeing Kyojuro’s contented look, the noodle shop owner not only waived his bill but also asked him to be their spokesperson. Kyojuro laughed and agreed, insisting on paying for all the guests present because “the strong have an obligation to protect (and treat to meals) the weak”! That was his ultimate persistence.
