Description

Built as a request from my youngest, this articulated “bubble” character was a fun design challenge we worked through together.

The goal was simple—but getting it right took a few iterations:

  • Functional hinged mouth that opens and closes
  • Slightly bulging eyes for that expressive look
  • Hidden magnet slot in the top for add-ons (top hat, camera, etc.)

What looked like an easy model ended up taking 4 revisions to dial in clean printing and smooth movement. The teeth and mouth mechanism were especially tricky and pushed me to learn a few new tricks in Onshape.

The original requirements included an iridescent bubble finish—I didn’t quite get there, but a chrome spray gives it a nice reflective look in the meantime.

Add-ons like a top hat or camera are likely coming next (apparently that’s important 😄).

**EDIT**

I have been very surprised by the interest in this model. My son showed me a few episodes so I would know what you people are talking about! I added a new profile with a tongue that connects to the teeth, and I am printing a new popcorn bowl sized one.. Also in response to the very valid “chain chomp” comments, I am printing the new one in a transparent blue petg. Your comments have been a lot of fun.

**Second Edit**

I have added a new AMS version. My son says it is “the goated version”, besides being setup for multi-color printing, I also removed a small circle on the inside of the design. That circle was originally intended for a magnet, but wasn't really practical and affected the model appearence when printing in a clear PETG.

It is a work in progress, but I hope to provide more information about my models, and some tips if you want to create your own.
