This model is designed for a DN80 standpipe (DIN fire department standard). It is a protective cover that seals the bottom of the standpipe. The goal is to reliably prevent the ingress of dirt during storage – for example, on an external vehicle hose reel. With regard to drinking water hygiene, this protection represents an important and necessary measure.
The design is optimized for printing with TPU (95A). (Elegoo TPU95a black) The cylindrical main body is reinforced to ensure high dimensional stability. The surrounding lamellae, however, are deliberately designed thin and slightly tilted upwards, so that they are flexible and adapt well to the inner contour of the standpipe.
The handle should be made of PETG to achieve higher rigidity. For assembly, two stainless steel screws and two washers are additionally required.
The handle has two 2 mm holes on the underside. Self-tapping screws or normal wood screws with 3 mm or 4 mm diameter can be easily inserted here.
For TPU printing, supports can also be used from TPU. These are very easy to remove and leave no visible marks or damage on the component. In my example, printing works reliably on a Bambu A1 without special adjustments. (External Spool)
The cover fits perfectly into the standpipe and can be easily inserted and removed. A small hole serves for drainage or pressure equalization, so that no vacuum is created when pulling it out. This is also clearly noticeable when inserting and removing, as air can escape.
Optionally, the cover can be secured to the standpipe with a wire rope or a chain. I personally handle it this way:
Should the protection ever be lost, it can be easily reprinted at any time. 🙂
I do not guarantee the durability or function of the cover. Long-term testing in practical use has not yet taken place.
Likewise, I cannot make any statement about how the used TPU material behaves under different conditions (e.g., moisture). It is possible that the cover gets stuck in the standpipe or is difficult to remove.
Should the handle yield or break, this can lead to loss of time in an emergency. I assume no liability for resulting damages or limitations.
The cover was designed by myself in Autodesk Fusion 360 and tested on a standpipe. Nevertheless, it is expressly a hobby project or a DIY solution without professional certification.

P.S.:
In practice, it repeatedly shows: Nothing is impossible for the fire department. It actually happened that a standpipe with an inserted original PP cover (commercially available) was placed into an underground hydrant – fortunately without immediate restrictions on water removal.
Only afterwards did the equipment managers notice that the protection was inside the standpipe, in the area of the valve discs.
For this reason, I designed the bottom plate of my cover larger and more stable to prevent unintentional insertion into the standpipe. Keyword: “idiot-proof” – as far as that is possible.
Additionally, I have now ordered yellow TPU to significantly increase the visibility of the cover.
