Description

Infinite possibilities for creative play

Print this, and you'll have a collection of snap-together polygons your kids can use to exercise their infinite creativity. Each piece has hinged edges that click together and pull apart again - triangles, squares, pentagons, and hexagons that want to become cubes, domes, dodecahedra, or whatever lopsided fortress your six-year-old (or sixty-year old) has in mind.

Why print them instead of buying a set?

Commercial construction toys are lovely, but they come with one quiet frustration: the box contains exactly as many pieces as the box contains. Your child's creative ambitions should not be bound by the box. This set fixes that.

  • Print as many as you want. When the fortress outgrows the starter set, print more. And more. Your 3D printer will bring delight to the light of your eyes. The spool is the limit, and there are always more spools.
  • Any colour, any combination. Want a set in your kid's favourite colour? Done. Want silver and gold because you're building something fancy? Also done. Want every piece a different colour because chaos is the point? Go wild!
  • A piece snaps? Print a replacement. No hunting through cushions, no "we've lost the last triangle and now nothing works." The file is right there.
  • Cheaper per piece than you'd guess, especially once you're printing your second or third batch.
  • Bi-Coloured pieces: I've never seen this in a commercial set. Your AMS makes it easy. Don't have AMS? Get the non-AMS print profile, and add a pause at the half-way mark to swap the colour.

What you get

I'm initially uploading four print profiles:

  • The Platonic Solids Kit (you can tell I'm a maths nerd) has all the polygons you need to make a complete set of platonic solids - a tetrahedron (four triangles), a cube (six squares), an octahedron (another 8 triangles) a dodecahedron (12 pentagons on three identical plates) and an icosahedron (20 triangles). Of course, you can print as many as you want of anything you want. There's an AMS profile (bi-coloured pieces) and a no-AMS profile
  • All the Polygons has at least one of every polygon I've designed - as many of each as ould fit on one plate. There's triangles, squares, pentagons, hexagons, heptagons, octagons, nonagons, decagons, hendecagons, and dodecagons, also in an AMS profile if you want bi-coloured pieces, and a no-AMS profile also.

Every action you take encourages me to keep making and uploading awesome models, and tells MakerWorld that this model is an awesome one that others deserve to see.

Print notes

PLA is fine, at normal settings. No support needed. The AMS versions only change filament once, so they are about as quick and efficient as the single colour ones, and also have that extra bling.

A note for the grown-ups

These are fun to build with on your own, too. The regular polygons combine into a an infinite variety of polyhedra, but there are a handful that are super special in terms of their symmetry - the Platonic and Archimedean polyhedra - and finding them by hands-on experimentation is a genuinely satisfying puzzle. Print a heap of shapes, decide a pattern to join a few together at one corner, and try to join as many shapes as possible following the exact same pattern. Don't be surprised if the best thing about the kids' bedtime is that it's your turn to play :)
