Compact storage solution to keep your filament dry
This version of the skinny dry box is for dry storage only.
If you are looking for the version that has roller bearings and options to feed your filament directly to the printer,
you can download those versions on their own pages : Single reel version or the Twin reel version .
Sick of damp filament or bulky and unreliable plastic suction bags?
Here's a solution that keeps your filament dry, away from damaging sunlight, and compact on your book shelf!
This highly customised 3mf file provided, contains all of the “storage only” versions on separate plates. I would recommend not changing any parameters significantly, as these have been extensively tested and optimised for strength and filament efficiency (lower cost per print). They are designed to snugly fit a standard Bambu reusable reel, but any reels of similar or smaller dimensions should fit.
The plates include:
- Base - with inbuilt desiccant (silica gel beads) trays, which can be refilled externally
- Base - no desiccant trays, if you prefer to use your own packets of silica gel (faster and less filament used)
- Top - with hole for round humidity meter
- Top - no hole if you don't need monitoring
- Funnel - a small funnel that slides into the desiccant “door” slot to help fill it with silica gel beads.
- Swatch - a filament swatch template is included. See notes below.
All tops and bases are interchangeable to suit your needs.
Notes:
- I have attempted to make this as compatible as possible with all filament types, but the “doors” on the desiccant trays may need to be resized in your slicer by +/- 2% if they are too tight. They should slide in and stop with a slight “click”.
- The photos show the original “pull tab” on the front. This has been improved for better grip.
- Supports are not required! I have added a small support for the round hygrometer, but this is not essential and can be turned off if you don't mind a small clean-up, as it's hidden behind the hygrometer's bezel anyway.
- I highly recommend using opaque filaments for this build to keep your reel inside safe from UV decomposition.
- There is no need for a rubber gasket. The way the sides lock into eachother keeps most moisture out. I have run a test in high humidity for 8 months and the box's relative humidity consistently stays under 16%.
- The two front clips will be pretty tight (in PLA/PETG) the first couple of times you use them, after which they provide a firm hold. If you prefer an easier to open box, they work well printed in TPU-ForAMS.
Assembly:
- Attach the two clips on the front using M3 x 25 machine thread screws
- Add another two M3 x 25mm machine screws for the latches to connect to
- Attach the lid using two M3 x 20 machine screws (you can use 25 or 30mm screws is you wish, they will just stick out a little bit)
Filament Swatch:
For quick reference to what is in the box, you can print a simple swatch that slides into the space on the front of the box. This swatch also includes 5 panels that show the level of transparency of the filament when held up to a light. For example, when you print with 0.2mm layers, you will get a 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 and 1mm panel.
The filament is set to change automatically at layer 8 from filament 3 to filament 4, to highlight the text. Simply select the filament type and colour in the #3 and #4 filament settings in the project window, and then change the text to suit your filament details…
To adjust the swatch text, open the project in Bambu Studio, select ADVANCED, select OBJECTS, scroll down to the swatch you want to use and right click on the line you want to update and select EDIT TEXT. To adjust the colour, right click on each object and select the filament you want to use for that item.
