Japanese Mountain Cliff Bonsai Planter - Live Incese and Waterfall Edition

A sculptural fusion of mountaineous landscape architecture and bonsai philosophy

This design translates the essence of mountainous terrain into a compact, engineered ecosystem. The composition follows a tiered cliff architecture, integrating elevation, flow paths, and visual asymmetry to create a balanced yet dynamic miniature environment.

NOTE: There is a chance that your print might not be water-tight, because of filement dryness levels, manufacturer, printer calibration, etc. If you see there is water leakage, consider applying a coat of epoxy inside the water chamber area to avoid leakage. I personally did not face any leak, but some others have, so consider doing this. If you do not want to do that, you can just use it as an incense holder, and the mist will flow down like a waterfall!

The model is internally divided into two functional chambers:
On the right side, a concealed water system houses the pump and circulation components that drive the live waterfall. Water is lifted to the top and cascades naturally through carved rock channels, creating a continuous closed-loop flow. On the left side, a dedicated bonsai chamber accommodates soil-based planting, complete with a drainage pathway to maintain proper moisture control without waterlogging. The hydroscape is designed with two vertical planting ports on the water side, directly connected to the main reservoir. These can be filled with sphagnum moss or coco coir to support water-loving plants, creating a hydroponic micro-environment. Suitable plants include ferns, creeping Jenny (moneywort), baby tears, and dwarf peace lily variants. This introduces a tropical layer that contrasts with the structured rock geometry while remaining functionally integrated into the water system. At the base, the waterfall terminates into a recessed collection basin. Adding small natural stones or gravel here diffuses impact energy, reduces splashing, and visually simulates water disappearing into porous rock. This basin is connected via three slit channels to the primary internal reservoir, enabling efficient recirculation back to the pump intake.

Boost Me (for free)

Please consider BOOSTING this model. I dedicated lots of time, thoughts, and efforts to create this mystical masterpiece for you all!

The model is printed in three primary components:
• Main mountain terrain body
• Bridge elements
• Zen temple structures

Assembly is straightforward and just requires superglue and does not require AMS. A rear access lid is integrated to conceal wiring and provide a clean fill point for water input, maintaining a minimal exterior aesthetic.

For enhanced realism, moss can be selectively applied using small amounts of superglue across ledges, crevices, and transition zones. Once water begins flowing, these details activate visually, introducing organic contrast against the engineered surfaces and reinforcing the illusion of a living landscape.

The overall aesthetic draws from Japanese cliffside architecture and garden design principles-controlled asymmetry, layered depth, and harmony between hard and soft elements. It is both a functional object and a display piece, engineered to perform while presenting a refined, high-end visual presence suitable for modern interiors or collector showcases.

ASSEMBLY GUIDE

FOLLOW THE STEPS BELOW:

STEP 1: Print all the parts and remove the supports carefully using a plier. You can leave the ones deep inside if you can't reach in.STEP 2: Attach the bridges at the given slots and the temples at desired locations using some superglue.STEP 3: Screw a brass NPT to barbed wire connector into the water hole at the back for the water channel. If using the printed one provided, just superglue it in there.
STEP 4: Secure the connector using some hot glue in its place. This will also make it watertight. STEP 5: Put the water pump in and connect the pump to this connector using the tube. You may use zipties to secure both the end of the tube. LINK to Pump here.STEP 6: Put some soil into the bonsai planter chamber and sphagnum moss or coco coir into the tubular holes in the water chamber side.
STEP 7: Plant your Bonsai or any plant of your choice. STEP 8: Put some small rocks into the water basin area. This basin is connected to the main chamber.STEP 9: Place and burn the incense of your scent choice. Make sure to coat the bottom of the holder with something non-flammable paint or coat layer, or place on a washer ring, or take the incense off before it reaches there, as it can potentially melt the plastic.
