🚀 Rocky's Habitat: Project Hail Mary Enclosure
The Ultimate Challenge for Hardcore Makers! Warning: This is a "Hard Mode" project. Achieving the level of clarity needed for the panels requires a VERY fine tuned machine plus patient post-processing and perfect extrusion.
Model Overview
This listing does include a Rocky to print and fit in the enclosure, but here is my origional which you can print as one piece, or in sections to assemble him and move him into fun new poses!!! https://makerworld.com/en/models/2520583-petg-nylon-movie-accurate-rocky-project-hail-mary#profileId-2772893
This is a high-fidelity, functional replica of the atmospheric enclosure or "bubble" used by Rocky in the sci-fi masterpiece Project Hail Mary. Designed as a perfect dodecahedron, this model isn't just a display piece—it’s a masterclass in 3D printing and assembly. The structure features a precision-engineered frame that houses twelve individual panels.
Functional Use & History
In the story, Rocky (an Eridian) lives in a high-pressure, high-temperature ammonia atmosphere that would be lethal to humans. This enclosure is the bridge between two species, allowing for interaction while keeping their environments separate.
For the maker, this serves as a stunning desk piece, a LED-lit lantern (if you add a light kit), or the centerpiece for a Project Hail Mary diorama.
Assembly & Recommended Materials
To achieve the iconic look, I highly recommend using SUNLU Clear PLA. It has excellent light transmission properties that, when printed with minimal infill or as a solid thin sheet, provides the best transparency for seeing Rocky inside. You can find it here: SUNLU Transparent/Clear PLA.
IMPORTANT ASSEMBLY NOTE: Since this model requires precise bonding of the dodecahedron frame and the clear panels, I recommend ARKA KRAFTPROTZ UNIVERSAL Superglue. This glue provides the structural integrity needed for the geometric tension of the dodecahedron and won't "fog" your clear SUNLU panels as much as cheaper cyanoacrylates.
Pro-Tips for Success
- Clear Panels: To get them see-through, print slow and hot. Check out this guide on how to remesh and color prints effectively if you decide to add accents: How to Color Prints in Bambu Studio.
- Scaling: If you want a life-sized Rocky habitat or a tiny keychain version, scaling a dodecahedron can be tricky for fitment. Watch my video on how to size, scale, and orient models here: Sizing & Scaling in Bambu Studio.
Remix Ideas & Keywords
This frame is a geometric playground! You can swap the clear panels for:
- Lithophanes: Turn it into a 12-sided family photo lamp.
- Dice Tower: Remix the top and bottom panels for a cosmic D&D accessory.
- Plant Terrarium: Use PETG for better moisture resistance (check out SUNLU PETG).
