Cocijo Zapotec God of Rain & Lightning
Print Profile(1)

Description
Cocijo was the supreme deity of the Zapotec civilization, the god of rain, lightning, and time — worshipped for over a thousand years in the valleys of Oaxaca, Mexico. His name translates to "lightning bolt" in the Zapotec language, and his image embodied the power of storms, the fertility of the earth, and the cycles of life and death. The original pieces were handcrafted in clay by Zapotec artisans between 300 BCE and 700 CE, during the height of Monte Albán, one of the first cities of ancient Mesoamerica.
