Here is my Hexagonal Lattice Bird Nest Supply Dispenser design, just posted on MakerWorld available for free download. 🐦

This functional print is designed to hold nesting materials to assist birds during nesting season. The hexagonal lattice provides plenty of access points for birds of all sizes.

Acceptable bird nest materials:

  • Materials that are generally natural, soft, and untreated, including small twigs, dry grass, feathers, moss, mud, and pine needles are safe. Small-cut natural fibers like wool or coconut fiber/coir can also be provided. The one in the main photos is of coconut fiber. Avoid long strings, dryer lint, human hair, or any materials treated with pesticides. See more info below.

Experts warn against giving birds the following:

  • Dryer lint: While soft, it holds water, dries into a crumbly mess, and contains harmful chemical residues from detergents and softener sheets

  • Chemically treated plants: If you want birds to use plants as nesting material, avoid spraying them with pesticides, they are harmful to birds and the insects they feed on.

  • Pet fur: Chemically treated pet fur can cause serious harm to chicks. This includes fur from pets treated for flea and tick prevention. As long as the hair is not too long and does not have lingering soap residue it is argued that it is okay to use but still not recommended due to the potential of birds choking or getting tangled.

  • Synthetic fibers: Synthetic fibers are not biodegradable and, like dryer lint, will also get waterlogged, preventing the nest from drying out after rain.

  • String and twine: Long pieces of string or twine pose a tangling hazard for birds. The same goes for landscape netting, monofilament, and fake spider webs.

I like this idea! However, I wanted to mention that if anyone is going to put yarn in here, please make sure it isn’t synthetic! Synthetic yarn is just plastic :( and we don’t want to put more of that in the environment!

I really appreciate you for updating it! I’m glad I could help. It’s honestly really amazing how much plastic is in our stuff!

More hollow or more infill would be opposite from one another. 15% is more than enough for this print. But you can always change the setting to a higher percent, it is just my recommendation. If you want it to be stronger i highly recommend to increase the wall count and not the infill so you use your filament in a more efficient way.

Do you think this could also be used for walnuts

I would just say full size ones would be a tight fit and you would probably need to break it up for the birds to grab it easily and eat safely, this is what I saw online on walnuts: Yes, you can put walnuts in bird feeders! They are highly nutritious and provide a great source of protein and healthy fats for your backyard birds. How to Feed Safely Offer the Right Size: Unless you have large birds like crows or ravens, serve the walnuts shelled and chopped into small pieces so smaller birds don't choke. Keep Them Fresh: Only offer raw, unsalted walnuts. Discard any nuts that smell rancid, stale, or are showing signs of mold, as these can be harmful to wildlife.

also im going to post a few more feeders soon. i have another one of mine that would work really well with walnuts. my main worry would be if not the right size the would be tough to pull through or fall out if too small so you would just have to feel it out.

nice thought, it can become dangerous for birds and chicks. they can get tangled, hair can constrict legs or other body parts :/
