Description

I kept having digital scales break or die (batteries) while trying to weigh out my coffee beans and thought: there has to be a better weigh. Then I remembered that the balance scale has been around for a thousand years and figured I'd try my hand a making a simple, printable one.

Key Features

  • Fully 3D-printable w/ no supports
  • Functional design using simple point pivots
  • Compact footprint with a clean, display-worthy silhouette
  • Satisfying movement and visible mechanical action
  • Great as a game prop, desk piece, conversation starter, or decorative print

Print Options

There are two formats. One ‘functional’, and one ‘aesthetic’. The aesthetic one is printed open to display the design and the pivots, but it is not very secure and would not make for a solid daily-use scale. The ‘functional’ one is the one I use daily for measuring out my coffee beans. I brew my coffee in an AeroPress, and as long as I'm around ~18g, I'm good to go. So, to this end, I set a counter-balance weight of around ~17g on the other side and then every day I just pour beans until the scale tips over (then I know I'm pretty close to 18g). I'l included the counter-balance weight cup in the print profiles for those looking for it. The little balls can be used to set your desired weight.

  • Functional – enclosed version that's designed to not come apart with daily use
  • Aesthetic – exposed/fragile version and designed smaller to take up less space

Disclaimer

These are difficult to balance. Due to the fact that there's constant contact at the pivot points, they tend to fall one way or the other when actually balanced. If high-precision is required, use an actual scale. I've found it to be sufficient for my needs and hope you enjoy it as well!
