Description

Enhanced (Perfect!) Gomboc !!!

A deceptively simple object — but once you set it in motion, it keeps coming back for more.

  • Inspired by the remarkable geometry of the Gömböc, this model represents a refined and print-optimised interpretation of one of the rarest known geometric forms
  • The Gömböc is a convex 3D shape with a single stable and a single unstable equilibrium point, meaning it will always return to its upright position no matter how you place it.
  • This Enhanced (Perfect) Gomboc features improved curvature and softened transitions across its surface, allowing for smoother rolling behaviour and more reliable self-righting motion
  • The refined geometry enhances both performance and tactile feel, making it especially satisfying to interact with.
  • Rounded and optimised edges reduce abrupt transitions, improving motion consistency while maintaining the mathematical elegance of the original form.

Why it’s interesting?

  • Self-righting behaviour feels almost “magical”.
  • Continuously shifting contact point during motion.
  • Rare geometric property not found in common shapes.
  • Great as a desk toy, educational model, or conversation starter.

Demonstrates principles used in:

  • Stability analysis and equilibrium studies.
  • Robotics and passive self-righting systems.
  • Advanced geometric modelling.

Printing recommendations: (~2h print time depending on settings):

  • Print with minimum layer height for best surface quality.
  • Print as a single solid geometry with full infill (100%) for: – consistent mass distribution – improved rolling behaviour
  • Print on the side or upside down
  • Light sanding may be required to remove minor surface imperfections, achieving a perfectly smooth surface will significantly improve rolling performance
