Fawkes is a pet of Albus Dumbledore, the headmaster of Hogwarts in the Harry Potter series. It possesses extraordinary magical abilities, can be reborn after death (phoenix), and its tears have healing properties.

After my two Hedwig owl figurines became popular, I continued to complete this larger (default full height 420mm, 2.5 times the size of "Perching Snowy Owl"), more magnificent, and more realistic work.

The shape, posture, coloring, and other details are all referenced from the movie. The default size is approximately 2/3 of the movie stills (Fawkes's head is about half the size of Harry's head). It features a segmented design and supports further enlargement for printing.

The overall design uses hidden seam segmentation, concealing assembly gaps beneath the feathers to enhance the model's integrity.

  1. The recommended configuration is the 420mm full-height segmented version. Non-essential parts use lightning infill for material saving and efficiency. After painting, hot melt glue is recommended for installation. v1.1 update
  2. After the v1.1 update, the 360mm version was removed. The unprintable parts of the 420mm version for A1 and similar machines were changed to angled printing, adding a few support marks for standard size printing.
  3. If a smaller size is needed, you can scale the recommended version yourself.
  4. After printing, manual coloring is required. It is recommended to use acrylic paint with a brush for thick coating of the feather texture, then use a fine-tip acrylic pen for detailed painting. The difficulty is moderate. (Coloring suggestions attached below)

May 30, 2026 v2 Upgrade

  1. Added full-size configurations, while fine-tuning each version of Fawkes, adjusting feather details, and adding more painted supports and sturdy tree supports, increasing filament consumption slightly in exchange for a lower chance of spaghetti due to insufficient printing plate adhesion.

Printing & Filament Instructions (Do not change print profile unless necessary)

  1. Most segmented parts have designed printing planes, and manual support settings have been added to prevent spaghetti.
  2. Parts without a printing plane are printed at an angle to minimize support surfaces and layer lines.
  3. The main body uses lightning infill to save material and improve printing efficiency.
  4. Filament recommendations: Main body (PLA Glossy or Matte Red), Claws (PLA Matte Gunmetal Grey or Rock Grey), Base (PLA Silk Gold or Silver Gold).

Support Removal & Installation Instructions

  1. v1.1 update: For the body and tail, wrap-around sturdy tree supports are used. You can pull the model directly upward from the build plate, and the supports will naturally separate.
  2. Head support removal requires care. It is recommended to use needle-nose pliers to cut the middle section of the support, then pull the support directly upward perpendicularly along the support surface.
  3. Since Fawkes has pure black eyes in the movie, I personally felt there was no need for segmentation. You can simply hand paint it, optionally adding glossy acrylic paint or UV resin.
  4. All joint positions are easy to understand. It is recommended to fix them with hot melt glue after painting, simply press firmly.

Coloring Instructions & Suggestions

  1. Follow the rule of light to dark when coloring. For fine details, pay special attention to potential ink bleed (especially with dark pens) caused by FDM layer lines, and use a stippling method for coloring.
  2. When coloring with acrylic pens, after the first layer dries, you can apply multiple layers to enhance the color.
  3. Coloring the feather texture can be done creatively by referencing movie stills. Gradient transitions can be created by rubbing with a wet tissue.
  4. Coloring suggestions
    1. Head: Yellow feathers, dark grey beak, glossy black eyeballs
    2. Abdomen: Referencing movie stills, brush light yellow acrylic paint. The color will bleed along the feather texture, creating a natural effect.
    3. Wings: Referencing movie stills, you can lightly coat (i.e., acrylic paint mixed with a little water) the small feather sections of the wings with a layer of light yellow to create a sense of depth.
    4. Tail: Referencing movie stills, the light yellow concentration should be between that of the abdomen and wings.
    5. Feet: Optional to paint.
