Description

This is a pencil box or crochet hook box I designed for family that feature print in place hinges and space for magnetic clasps. Optionally you can also print the insert tray for additional organization.

Notes on printing

  1. The circular nubs built into the print profile are to stop warping. This is a long rectangular object that will warp without them. They are made to be easily ripped off or shaved off if needed.

  2. There are pauses built into the print profile for inserting the magnets into the clasps. You don't want this to take long of course so you don't affect the print too much but there are some supports you will have to take out first with some tweezers.
  3. I printed in Matte PLA. I am sure other filaments will work too but matte just prints looking so smooth.

Inserting the magnets

If this is your first time inserting magnets into print… it was mine too. The profile has been tested and confirmed (in PLA matte) to fit the magnets perfectly. The only thing you should have to worry about is making sure the magnets are facing the right direction to attract to each other.

I had some good advice given to me which was to select your two magnets ahead of time and mark both of them with a marker to show which side needs to point up within the print.

If you try other fun colors or filaments please share pictures! I love seeing prints out in the wild and want to see how the hinges and finish turn out with other filaments!

I enjoy designing but I am fully aware that my models could be improved. If you have trouble with this or any of my designs, please include feedback with your ratings so I know what to work on. If you really like this design and want to see more like it, please reach out and let me know what you'd like to see! I love reading comments!

A really nice design, but I lot more detail lines to it that makes the design stronger than needed, as well as excessive print time

Hey! Thanks for the feedback! So you think maybe some thinner walls to reduce material and time? The hinges and claps working okay for you though?

The hinges are PERFECT and the alignment of everything is also perfect. I didn't add the magnets because what it'll be used for didn't need it, but it closes nicely and perfectly aligns when closed. Thinner walls to reduce material and time would be good, maybe as an additional model, not a replacement.
