About This Project
This project started when I noticed my kid using magnet tiles as a runway for his die-cast airplanes. So naturally, I went looking for a proper toy airport… and discovered the options were basically:
- a $600+ museum-quality scale model, or
- cheap garbage that in no way resembles an actual airport
This is a modular airport system built from 150mm (≈6 inch) square tiles, designed specifically for die-cast toy airplanes.
Each tile represents a piece of an airport: runway sections (including precision runway markings), taxiways (with hold-short markings), aprons, parking, intersections, and more to come!
You can build a small runway, a full airport layout, or something completely custom!
Make it as big or as simple as you want.
If you build one, I’d love to see your layout!
Boost Me (for free)
Shameless boost plug for if you and/or your kid love airplanes as much as me and my kid! Either way, more tiles coming very soon!
Design Goals
- Modular – rearrange and expand endlessly
- Customizable – build your own layouts
- Scalable – print a few tiles or dozens
- Actually looks like an airport
I tried to keep markings and layout as realistic as possible, while still working within the limits of multicolor printing (and a 4-color AMS).
Current Upload
Small Runway starter layout, featuring:
- runway tiles
- edge/corner tiles
- a simple, playable setup
This is a great place to start before expanding into a larger airport.
Precision Runway Expansion Pack - Adds 500, 1500, and 2000 foot touchdown zone indicator markings. Makes a Small Runway (5 tiles) into an 8 or 11 tile runway! Print twice if you want the touchdown zone indicator markings on both ends of your runway! This profile also prints the associated edge tiles.
Coming Soon
More tiles and layouts are already completed or planned, including:
- Next Up - Apron, Parking and Terminal areas
- After That - Taxiways, Intersections, and Hold Short Lines
- Airport accessory tiles (control tower, approach lights, etc.)
- Additional layouts and print profiles
This will grow into a full airport system over time!
💬 Feedback and ideas for new tiles are welcome!
Notes
- Tiles are designed to print flat for clean markings and efficient multicolor printing
- Each tile prints individually
- Designed around standard die-cast airplane sizes
- Tiles print up-side-down… this is to ensure the best possible finish on the color detail on the top of the tiles.
