History of the Object
Saint Francis of Assisi (1181/1182–1226) was the founder of the Franciscan Order and is known for his life of simplicity, humility, and care for the poor. He is most widely recognized for his deep connection to animals and nature.
Because of this, he is commonly known as the patron saint of animals and ecology.
