Description

Easter Egg Hunt Gift Box

Print one or many, these locking gift boxes each have their own uniquely shaped key. They’re great for hiding gifts or easter eggs for kids and can even be chained together to make longer hunts! Simply put the key for one box inside a different box and they won't be able to open the last box until they've found all the rest.

  • Box prints in just 2 hours – even with AMS multicolour
  • Quick to assemble, prints in place as one piece, just fold up the box and click it together
  • Internal dimensions 50x50x50mm
  • Simple enough for a toddler to operate
  • Great for teaching patience to kids – hide the key inside a different kind of box and watch how excited they get when they can finally open all of those boxes they've found
  • See my profile for toys desinged to fit inside!

Assembly

  1. The box prints all in one piece, flat on the buildplate. The two layers of filament joining each piece acts as a guide for folding it up and gives a nice finish for those edges (there can be some crazing visible on darker filaments, but it’s not very noticeable).
  2. Folding should be done from the lid first, fit the pieces together and once it’s all assembled to press them again firmly. If it doesn’t feel like two edges want to click together, try clicking the sides together in a different order before using too much force. Then assemble the rest
  3. Free the print in place locking mechanism. Wiggle it in and out all around the sides until you feel a little bit of give, then push the lock catch firmly to the right (into the wall), this should free the top part, allowing the lock to turn with the key. See gif below.

NOTE: You can use a couple drops of glue in the last few joints if you're worried about them coming apart, but they've survived extensive toddler testing without any glue. The key shouldn’t need glue either but a drop can be placed in the hole before pressing the shaft in.

Suggestions about how to use them

  • Use it for a multi levelled easter egg/treasure hunt. Example: Make a bunch of Egg boxes, give your kids a key each and hide the boxes inside the house. Hide the keys (one for each kid) to a Bunny box inside one of the Egg boxes, then in every other Egg box, put a mini easter egg and a clue to where the box with the Bunny key is (e.g. “It's upstairs”). Repeat with the Bunny boxes but maybe this time there're some inside but most are around the garden. And finally hide a final box that has a big gift inside, or the directions to a full sized easter hidden somewhere.
  • Works great as a standalone gift box, just print one and it's key. Fits our favourite 3d printed tugboat and a number of other prints on my profile (coming soon!)
  • Hide them in your house for your kids to find, but don't give them the key at first. Wait until they've found a few that they can't open, then let them find a key. Then repeat with a different type of lock, hidding the key in one of the boxes that they do have a key for. It's a very exciting moment when they find a key that they've been waiting weeks for.
