This 3D-printed planter is more than just a decorative shell – it is a technically engineered ecosystem. By combining passive ventilation, controlled overflow, and a capillary irrigation system, it provides optimal growing conditions for almost any plant species.
- Standard Compatibility: Optimized for nursery pots with a diameter of 103–120 mm (max. height 100 mm).
- 10/10 Air-Water Management: The bottom spacer holds 10 mm of water in the reservoir, while a 10 mm air gap above it ensures constant oxygen circulation at the roots. This effectively prevents root rot and keeps the water from becoming stagnant.
- Hygiene Rings: Integrated rings at the top act as a debris barrier, keeping soil out of the reservoir and maintaining high water quality.

Optimal Water Supply: The Capillary Wick
To use the system as a self-watering pot, a wick is essential.
- Dimensions: The wick should be approximately 30 mm long. About 10 mm should be inserted directly into the substrate of the inner pot to deliver moisture to the roots. The remaining 20 mm bridge the air gap and hang into the water reservoir.
- Material Recommendation: A fiberglass wick (6–8 mm diameter) is the gold standard. Fiberglass is rot-proof and provides consistent capillary action for years. Alternatively, synthetic nylon-cotton blends work well. Avoid pure cotton, as it decomposes quickly in standing water.
Where to find the wick:
- Online: Search for "irrigation wick," "capillary wick," or "self-watering wick."
- Hardware Stores: Check the garden irrigation section or look for replacement wicks for branded systems (e.g., Lechuza).
- Household: Non-waxed fiberglass wicks for oil lamps work perfectly. Important: They must be unwaxed to absorb water.
- DIY Hack: Strips of microfiber cloth or nylon shoelaces (rot-resistant) can also be used in a pinch.

Group 1: Moisture-Lovers (Wick Recommended)
- Papyrus (Cyperus): Loves constant moisture.
- Ferns (e.g., Boston Fern, Maidenhair): Need consistent dampness and high humidity.
- Calathea: Sensitive to drought stress.
- Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum): Prevents the typical drooping of leaves.
- Anthurium: Enjoys the evaporative cooling/humidity inside the pot.
- Spider Plant (Chlorophytum): Very efficient at using the reservoir.
- Marantha (Prayer Plant): Stable climate without waterlogging.
- Coleus: Promotes vigorous, lush growth.
- Kitchen Herbs (Basil, Mint, Parsley): Stay fresh much longer and won’t wilt instantly.
Group 2: Moderate Plants (Wick Optional)
- Ficus Bonsai: Root ventilation prevents rot in sensitive root systems.
- Ivy (Hedera helix): Robust outdoors; the wick helps on hot summer days.
- Pothos (Epipremnum): Accelerates growth when using the wick.
- ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas): Better without a wick; benefits primarily from bottom ventilation.
- Snake Plant (Sansevieria): Use without a wick. The air circulation is the main advantage here.
