Customizable foldable box with separate lid

The model is inspired by the inventions of the renowned inventor Robert Gair, who created the first models of foldable boxes for industrial use in 1890.

This version is a parametric reinterpretation with several modifications to allow anyone to easily create boxes of any size. The advantages of creating a box in this way are numerous, but the main ones are:

  • less filament usage,
  • texture on all sides
  • short print times.

Once printed, it only needs to be folded along the grooves

How to use the generator:

To customize the model, you need to access the MakerWorld website on your browser; Bambu Studio currently does not support in-app customization. Once on the website, simply click on the customize button to open the generator. Then, you will only need to enter the desired dimensions, replacing the preset ones in the left column, and click “generate”. Once satisfied with the result, simply download it in .3mf format. Once opened in the Bambu Studio app, you will need to separate the bottom part from the top. To do this, simply select the object and right-click on it, then select split - to objects, and then drag the two parts to separate plates.

I strongly recommend downloading and using the print profiles (.3mf) uploaded on the model page.

Printing tips:

For correct box printing, you need to properly clean and calibrate the print bed. Furthermore, for this model, the choice of material plays a fundamental role; therefore, it is highly recommended to use PLA or PLA Silk + which can flex without breaking. As I have not tested other filaments, I cannot guarantee the box's functionality; test them at your own risk.

Editable variables:

  • Side a mm: modifies side “a” (see cover photo)

  • Side b mm: modifies side “b” (see cover photo)

  • Box Height mm: modifies the height of the container

  • Lid Height mm: modifies the height of the container lid. DO NOT use values higher than “Box Height mm”. Ideally, I recommend using ½ of “Box Height mm” for shorter boxes and going down to ¼ for taller boxes.

Recommended print settings:

  • 0.4mm nozzle
  • PLA Basic Bambulab or PLA Silk + Bambulab
  • A textured print plate will add aesthetics to the finished product!

I reiterate the importance of using the print profiles uploaded on the model page

All test models and the final model were made with my A1 mini and are therefore compatible with all higher-end printers. The project was entirely designed on Fusion 360, with several prototypes to ensure maximum functionality and strength. Of course, it does not require supports but does require post-print folding.

Personal note:

I created this two-piece version to meet the high demand for boxes capable of holding larger items. For smaller items, I refer you to my other model: “customizable foldable box” which you can find on my profile homepage.

Additionally, I wanted to thank everyone who, through comments, direct messages, and boosts, has helped and motivated me to create ever-improving models. What I'm finding here is truly a wonderful community, thank you from the bottom of my heart!

See you soon with other projects!

P.S. I don't want to spoil anything, but do you like organic designs generated with mathematical formulas? ;D

Versions:

V1 – 27.03.2026: 4 variables available to modify: lid and box height, side “a” and “b”
