Baltan

Alien Baltan, the Space Ninja, is an alien character who appeared in the tokusatsu series 'Ultraman' produced by Tsuburaya Productions of Japan, first appearing on July 24, 1966, in episode 2 of 'Ultraman' titled 'Shoot the Invaders'.

Appearance and Design: Before conflicting accounts emerged, there were three proposed prototypes, namely crabs, lobsters, and cicadas. Detailed analysis:

Face shape: The eyes, similar to a cicada's, and the wings that Alien Baltan was originally planned to have (referencing the powerful Alien Baltan in Ultraman Powered), are all very similar to a cicada, and its slender piercing-sucking mouth is also based on a cicada's mouthparts.

Hands: Its arms have large pincers like a lobster. Normally, it walks upright on two feet, but Tohl Narita, who designed the Semimaru alien, once stated that highly intelligent beings like Alien Baltan should not have tool-like large pincers for hands, and furthermore, Alien Baltan, being modified from cicada-humans, should not have large pincers, otherwise, it wouldn't resemble a cicada. However, Toshihiro Iijima's idea was ultimately prioritized. These large pincers were heavy, and it was difficult for the suit actor to wear the suit and keep the pincers level, so in the show, Alien Baltan would occasionally lower and swing its arms and pincers. (Tohl Narita was the designer of the cicada-human alien and once had a dispute with Toshihiro Iijima over Baltan's hands, but Iijima's design for the hands was ultimately adopted.)

(However, Barrel, who appeared in the CG short film 'Kaiju Rush', had a left hand similar to a human's, so the large pincers might just be a common type of tool worn by Alien Baltans.)

Alien Baltan's iconic laugh: 'フォッフォッフォッフォッ……' (hohohohoho...), regarding the origin of this unique laugh, I will mention it here:

This sound was borrowed from the voice of Matango, the vampiric monster appearing in Toho's 1963 horror tokusatsu film 'Matango' (Attack of the Mushroom People).

Additionally, the voices of Kemur, the Kidnapping Monster (Kemur-Being) from 'Ultra Q', and Lily, the Devil's Child (悪魔ッ子 リリー/Lily), also utilized this same sound.
