“And I'm free, I'm free fallin',Yeah I'm free, free fallin'” What a classic song!
If you love Tom Petty, you may also love to print this beautiful 12 string guitar model. It is such a beautiful and unique guitar that was the signature guitar of the one and only Tom Petty. I modelled this guitar with 12 strings and the 6 string version (coming soon). I really love how great this guitar turned out. It was a challenge to string but it is totally doable.
To string this guitar, I made holes in the head stock to feed the fishing wire up through. For best result I suggest keeping slight tension on the string when gluing, for best tensioned strings.
- Make sure to pull the wire a little more than twice the full length of the guitar.
- Tie a knot and superglue the knot of wire into the hole to secure it.
- Set the wire into the appropriate slot of the nut.
- Then feed the remaining wire down the neck and through the appropriate hole in the bridge.
- Loop it through the tailpiece and back through the bridge into the adjacent hole.
- Run the wire back up the neck and also the adjacent slot of the nut, and finally, with a tiny dab of superglue secure the wire to the
I have made several options in the print profile, depending on how you may want to print. There is a standard set of plates which are what are depicted in the cover photos. The guitar below is all standard printed parts and flat printed body. The body was sanded smooth and polished for final finish.

The image below depicts difference between printing the optional “shiny” plates and standard plates labeled in the 3MF file. The surface finish is in my opinion a little smoother and more appealing. With this method the pickguards are printed flat on the surface and use the Archemedean chord bottom finish to create the attractive finish. All of the knobs and switch are therefore printed separately and added later. The pickups and bridge are printed on an angle to give them a shinier top surface finish.

All optional plates are highlighted inside red boxes. All other plates are standard print plates.

The finished guitar in the photos was printed with the body flat. The top surface is finished with ironing. I don't prefer this method, but it is easier and faster to print. I did print another body vertically as I prefer. I printed the entire piece using ludicrous speed mode in about 3.5 hours with no change to set print speeds in the print profile. So if you prefer a better surface finish and don't mind a 3.5-hour wait, (normal print speed ~6.5 hours), I suggest this method. I failed to take a picture of the flat printed body. The ironing settings do have a nice finish, but in small areas the surface is slightly raised and not to my liking. As a perfectionist, I immediately initiated my sanding procedure of rough sanding the raised spots with a nail file, then wet sanding with 1000, 1500, and finally 2500 grit smoothing blocks.

Please help boost my guitar model. Much love and rock on!
For best results. I recommend using a High Flow nozzle (I use 0.4mm HF). And a supertack cool build plate from Bambu or Biqu. These are what I recommend for best adhesion and best speed.
I have made a general video describing my many techniques of making these guitar models. I use mostly just super glue, flat file, sand paper and a select size of drill bits to build them. And I use 0.25mm fishing line to add the strings to the model. I go over this in fine detail, just follow the link below for more:
