Description
This is my version of a 4-Fly rod holder. I have successfully printed all the parts except the tube mounts, as I don't need them. I believe it is the only 4 rod holder available. Due to the size of the parts, a 300 by 300mm or bigger bed is required. I printed in ASA, and I used 10-foot 1.5" Schedule 40 tubing from Lowe's.
Mounts included:
- 4Runner TRD roof rack - Recommend 6foot tubes as the roof rack is short
- Prinsu Rack 2x1 crossbars - 10foot tubes work great
- U-bolt Generic mount
I used these requirements for the design:
- Holds 4 rods
- Printable in 300x300 bed
- No supports
- Latches to keep the box closed
- Can be locked
- Easy to mount on different vehicles without complete disassembly
The print parameters are: 5 walls, bottom and top to 10 layers or 2mm, infill 10 to 12%. Please note that the larger box is close to 1kg of filaments. I bought a 3kg roll. I was able to print all the pieces, including 2 spacers and 2 sets of mounts (prisu and 4r) with it.
About the assembly
The only tricky part is that the front of the box is printed in two pieces. It assembles with screws, but I also glued them with ASA glue. I dissolved asa with acetone to make a glue. I also made a very light paint with ASA and acetone and brushed it over all the parts. This gives a nice glossy finish. Just remember to use the glue and paint outside.
One last note: I have my printer fairly well calibrated. I recommend first printing about 15 mm of the spacer to test the tube fitting. I included the fusion file in case anyone needs to decrease/increase the tolerance or if you need a specific mount.
