Sonrise: String-art Cross
The Easter Sonrise is a sculptural tribute to the morning that changed everything. At its heart sits a suspended cross, held in place by 150 radiating beams of golden light. The design uses a architectural arch to frame the cross, the symbolization is left to the observer - it could be the empty tomb, the rising sun of a new beginning or an Easter egg - there are many interpretations.
When placed in a well-lit area, moving around the piece creates a dynamic sense of shimmering movement in the golden "rays" that mimics the first light of dawn. It is a clean, modern expression of faith that fits perfectly on a mantel, a prayer altar, or as a centerpiece for your Easter table.
Printing Notes:
Scaling will change the dimensions of the strings, and the print will fail.
Why It Works:
If you are looking at this model and wondering how it prints without a mountain of supports, the secret lies in two specific technical areas: intentional bridging and advanced pathing.
1. Intentional Bridging
Traditional 3D printing builds layers on top of one another. However, most modern printers are incredibly capable of "bridging"—extruding filament in mid-air between two points.
In this model, each golden ray is a single, continuous bridge. By moving the print head at a specific speed and tension from the center hub to the outer frame, the filament cools almost instantly in the air, creating a rigid, straight line without sagging. It’s essentially "drawing" in 3D space.
2. Advanced Pathing
For the best results, you must use the Arachne Wall Generator (found in your slicer's Quality or Strength settings) rather than the "Classic" engine.
- Classic Mode: Struggles with thin, tapering lines. It often tries to force multiple perimeter passes or "gap fill" into the rays, which can cause the printer to vibrate or over-extrude, leading to snapped strings.
- Arachne Mode: Uses variable extrusion width. It treats each ray as a single, fluid path that adjusts its thickness dynamically. This results in much stronger "strings" and a significantly cleaner finish where the rays meet the frame.
Pro-Tips for a Perfect Print
- Cooling is King: Ensure your part cooling fan is at 100% for the golden rays. The faster the plastic solidifies, the straighter your "sunlight" will be.
- Open the Door: If you are using an enclosed printer (like a Bambu X1/P1) and having trouble with sagging bridges, try opening the front door or removing the top glass lid. Enclosed chambers trap heat, which prevents the filament from cooling fast enough during the bridge. You want the coolest ambient air possible hitting those golden strings.
- Dry Your Filament: Stringing or "oozing" will ruin the look. Use dry filament to ensure the transitions between the rays are crisp.
- No Supports Needed: Seriously! Adding supports to the rays will actually make the model impossible to clean. Trust the bridge.
