Description

“El Zulo” Sculpture – Cartagena

The sculpture “El Zulo” is a powerful public artwork located in Cartagena, created as a reflection on violence, captivity, and historical memory in Spain. The piece depicts a human figure confined within a tight, enclosed space, evoking the hidden cells (“zulos”) used by the organization ETA during kidnappings.

The figure’s constrained posture conveys intense emotions such as fear, isolation, and helplessness. Through its raw and realistic style, the sculpture creates a strong visual and emotional impact, encouraging viewers to confront a difficult chapter of recent history.

More than just a work of art, “El Zulo” stands as a symbol of remembrance and respect for the victims of terrorism. It serves as a reminder of the importance of memory, resilience, and awareness, making it a meaningful cultural landmark within the city.
