Description

Apollon Belvedere.

Apollo Belvedere is one of the most famous classical statues in European art history. The Vatican Museums state that the sculpture was discovered in Rome in 1489, later acquired by Cardinal Giuliano della Rovere, and moved to the Vatican after he became Pope Julius II, where it is documented in the Belvedere from 1508.

The statue is generally understood as a Roman marble copy of a lost Greek original, often attributed to the Greek sculptor Leochares. The Vatican also notes that the sculpture became especially celebrated through the art historian J. J. Winckelmann, who regarded it as one of antiquity’s highest artistic ideals.

Apollo is the Greek god associated with, among other things, music, poetry, prophecy, order, and protection, which helps explain why the figure became such a strong symbol of classical beauty and harmony. SMK’s own page also notes that Apollon is associated with music and protection against evil.

Print note
This version is scaled to 1:10. The original sculpure is 232 centimeters high. Depending on your printer and orientation, supports may be helpful, especially around extended details. Larger prints will preserve more of the sculptural detail from the original scan.
