Fernão de Magalhães (Ferdinand Magellan) – Bust
🇫🇷 Description (French)
This bust represents Fernão de Magalhães, known in French as Fernand de Magellan, a 16th-century Portuguese navigator and explorer, famous for having led the first expedition to achieve the first circumnavigation of the Earth.
In the service of the Spanish crown, Magellan undertook an ambitious expedition in 1519 aiming to reach the Spice Islands by sailing west. This expedition would lead to the discovery of the passage connecting the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean, today known as the Strait of Magellan. This crossing marked a major turning point in the history of navigation and knowledge of the world.
Although Magellan himself did not complete the voyage — he was killed in 1521 during a clash in the Philippines — his expedition was continued by his men and completed by the Spanish navigator Juan Sebastián Elcano, thus achieving the first complete circumnavigation of the globe. This feat concretely confirmed the immensity of the oceans and the true dimension of the planet.
This bust is inspired by the most popular representation of the explorer, as it appears in the best-known historical portraits. The sculpted face features prominent volumes and a determined expression, evoking the spirit of adventure and the resolve of a navigator confronting the unknown. The characteristic beard and hairstyle recall the traditional iconography associated with Magellan, while the sober posture reinforces the historical and timeless dimension of the character.
This sculptural interpretation pays tribute to one of history's great explorers, whose voyage profoundly transformed the understanding of the world and the oceans.
