Classic Tournament-Inspired Chess Set

Tired of oversized chess sets, random proportions, mismatched bases, and pieces that feel cheap?

This project was created to solve exactly that.

The goal was to design a clean, classic chess set with consistent proportions and dimensions that closely follow official tournament guidelines. Every piece shares the same base diameter (except the pawns, slightly smaller), creating a balanced and coherent look across the entire set.

The result is a solid, well-proportioned chess set that prints reliably and feels substantial in hand.

I also included multiple printing profiles so the set works well with different printers and board sizes.

Printing Profiles

Three profiles are included depending on printer and board size.

A1 Mini – 40 mm Board Square

Base diameter: 31.25 mm
Pawn base diameter: 29 mm

Print settings:

• 10 external wall loops
• 50% Gyroid infill

Materials

Printed using PLA Wood filaments:

White pieces — PLA Wood Tan Birch
Black pieces — PLA Wood Walnut

The wood-filled filament gives the set a warmer, more traditional look compared to standard PLA.
