What Makes This Model Special

Mono Lake Details

Mono Lake is one of the highlights of this model. The blue water adds a striking contrast to the surrounding terrain, and I’m especially happy that the shapes of Paoha Island and Negit Island remain visible even at this scale.
 

Natural River Systems

The raw terrain data contains many tiny waterways that would appear as scattered dots when printed. I carefully simplified the system to keep the main river families—such as the Merced River and Tuolumne River—and their tributaries. The rivers were subtly widened so their flow remains visible across the landscape.

Realistic Landscape Colors

Instead of assigning colors purely based on elevation, vegetation areas were guided by satellite imagery so forests appear where they actually exist in the real terrain.

Thoughtful Snow Placement

Snow coverage was tuned using elevation, slope direction, and slope steepness. North-facing slopes retain more snow while south-facing slopes melt earlier, and very steep faces accumulate little snow at all. This helps the model better reflect how snow naturally settles across the Sierra Nevada.

Optimized for Multi-Color Printing

Terrain colors were clustered into four main colors to fit the A1 AMS Lite, with additional subtle tuning to remove tiny color patches and reduce unnecessary filament changes during printing.
