Parametric Bahtinov Mask

Achieve perfect focus for your astrophotography with this precision Bahtinov mask. Originally designed and sold under the Astro By Orlando brand, I am now sharing these files for free with the community as I can no longer keep up with physical shipments.

How to Customise

This model is fully parametric. You do not need to download separate files for different lenses:

1. Click the "Customise" button on this page.
2. Input the Diameter of your lens or telescope.
3. The model will automatically regenerate to your exact specifications.
4. Download the generated file and print.

Why this design?

• Optimised for Quality: While these can be printed in any material, I recommend Carbon Fibre reinforced PETG (CF-PETG). It offers superior strength and heat resistance compared to standard PLA, ensuring the mask won't warp during temperature shifts.
• Focal Length: While effective across various setups, Bahtinov masks perform better at longer focal lengths. Results are excellent from 100mm upwards; shorter focal lengths may yield less defined spikes.
• Print Settings: No special settings or supports are required. Standard infill and layer heights work perfectly.

Sizing and Fit

To find the correct size, measure the outer diameter of your lens hood or dew shield.

• The model includes a 0.5mm tolerance, so entering your exact measurement should provide a good fit.
• If you prefer a "soft" fit, you can enter a slightly larger diameter and add some felt tape to the inside of the mask rim.

How to Use

1. Place the mask over the front of your lens or telescope.
2. Aim at a bright star and check your live view (or take a short test exposure).
3. The mask will produce a diffraction pattern with three distinct spikes.
4. Adjust your focus until the central spike is perfectly centred between the two outer spikes.
5. Remove the mask before you begin your imaging session!
