A straight stroke is one of the most important fundamentals in pool, yet many players unknowingly add unwanted side spin to the cue ball. The TrueStroke Trainer is a simple practice tool designed to instantly reveal those errors.
This 3D-print is a standing loop that sits on the table and allows a cue ball to pass through with only a small amount of clearance. Shoot the cue ball straight through the loop to the far rail and watch how it returns.
How It Works
- Place the trainer on the table a short distance in front of the cue ball (12"-36").
- Shoot the cue ball straight through the loop toward the far rail.
- Let the ball rebound naturally and watch how it returns through the trainer.
What the Results Tell You
- Ball returns cleanly through the loop
Your stroke was straight. - Ball hits the right side of the loop or rolls wide of the loop
You unintentionally applied right English. - Ball hits the left side of the loop or rolls wide of the loop
You unintentionally applied left English.
Because the opening allows only a small margin around the cue ball, even small stroke errors become obvious.
The trainer acts as both a visual guide and a physical checkpoint, giving immediate feedback that helps you identify and correct problems in your stroke.
Training Spin and Cue Ball Control
The TrueStroke Trainer can also be used to practice intentional side spin and improve cue ball control.
For this drill, your goal is different:
- Apply left or right English to the shot.
- Shoot the cue ball cleanly through the loop on the way out.
- Allow the cue ball to rebound from the rail.
- The returning ball should miss the loop noticeably to the left or right depending on the spin applied.
This drill helps you learn how side spin affects the cue ball after contact with the rail.
As experienced players know, applying English introduces squirt and throw, which slightly changes the cue ball's path. Successfully sending the cue ball straight through the loop first, while still achieving a wide miss on the return, helps train the micro-adjustments needed for accurate spin shots.
This makes the trainer useful not only for straight stroke practice but also for developing better position play and cue ball control.
Included Versions
This model includes two versions of the trainer so you can choose the level of challenge that fits your practice.
Standard Version
The standard version provides a small clearance around the cue ball and is ideal for:
- Learning the drill
- Developing a straight stroke
- Identifying unintended side spin
- General practice and warm-ups
Pro Version
The Pro version reduces the opening clearance by 5 mm, making it significantly more demanding.
This version is extremely sensitive to even small stroke errors and is designed for:
- Advanced players
- Precision stroke training
- Dialing in a perfectly straight cue delivery
If the cue ball passes cleanly through the Pro version on the way out and the way back, you can be confident your stroke is extremely straight.
Simple Practice Drill
- Place the trainer 12–24 inches in front of the cue ball.
- Aim straight down table and shoot through the loop.
- Allow the cue ball to rebound off the far rail.
- Watch whether the ball returns cleanly through the loop.
Repeat the drill until the ball consistently travels through the trainer both directions.
This drill helps develop:
- A straight cue delivery
- Proper cue alignment
- Consistent stroke mechanics
- Better cue-ball control
Printing Notes
- Designed to print without supports
- Compatible with standard 2.25″ cue balls (57.2 mm)
- Prints quickly and uses minimal filament
- Works well in PLA, PETG, or ABS
For best visibility on the table, print in a bright color.
Who This Is For
- New players learning proper fundamentals
- League players refining their stroke
- Solo practice sessions
- Anyone serious about improving cue delivery and cue-ball control
Practice with the Standard version to develop consistency, then challenge yourself with the Pro version to refine your stroke even further.
A straight stroke is the foundation of great pool — and this simple tool helps you train it.
