This is a butterfly comb that I designed from scratch in Autodesk Fusion 360.

It works like a butterfly knife, but instead of a blade it has a comb, so it’s safe and can actually be used. The handles rotate around the comb just like a balisong, which makes it fun to flip around or just fidget with when you’re bored.
I spent quite a while designing and adjusting the model to make sure everything worked smoothly. The hinges had to be the right size so the handles could move properly, and I also added the textured pattern on the handles so it feels better to hold and gives a bit more grip when flipping it. A lot of the design process was testing small changes and making sure the parts fit together well while still being easy to print.
The model has a small latch at the base, which is a friction fit, which means that you just have to push it together and it will hold the two sides closed. This is a good add on for portable use, and it will hold the butterfly comb together, so it doesn't move or flop around when not in use.
The comb itself was designed to actually work, not just look like one. The teeth are spaced so it can go through hair easily and not feel too sharp or fragile. I also tried to make it strong enough so the teeth wouldn’t snap off easily during normal use. The comb shape also helps keep the weight balanced when the handles are flipping around, which makes the movement feel smoother.
This model is meant to be a fun print that doesn’t take forever to make. On most printers it takes around an hour depending on your settings. It’s also designed so it prints easily without supports and doesn’t use a lot of material. After printing the parts you just put them together and it’s ready to use.
Overall this was a fun project to design and a good challenge to model in Fusion 360. I wanted to make something that looks cool, prints quickly, and is actually useful at the same time. It works as a normal comb but also as a fidget toy you can flip around, which makes it a pretty fun thing to keep on your desk or show to friends.
For the print shown in the picture I used PLA filament. The comb was printed in red PLA, the handles were printed in blue PLA, and the other handle set was printed in gray PLA.
Please note that if using multiple different colors, that the material might have different shrinkage, and the tolerances could be different than if you printed it in one solid color.
