Automatic Filter Roller – 3D Printed Reef Roller
Automatic mechanical filtration roller system for aquarium sumps, designed to remove suspended particles before they reach the rest of the filtration system
This roller operates using a 12V 5 RPM motor combined with a JK11 controller, allowing the filter roll to advance automatically when the water level increases
The system provides a compact, efficient, and low-maintenance filtration solution, ideal for marine and reef aquariums looking to replace traditional filter socks
⚙️ Main Components
The system is designed to operate with the following components
- 12V – 5 RPM motor
- JK11 controller
- 12V power supply
- Filter fleece roll
- Screws and mounting hardware
📦 To simplify the assembly process, a complete AliExpress shopping list with all required parts for the build is provided
🔧 Installation
1️⃣ Assembly

During assembly, the following recommendations should be followed
- The two upper red rods should be fixed using superglue to ensure structural stability
- It is recommended to attach the motor to the support once the connections have been made, because when the roller is wet it can exert more effort and rotate on itself
- The lower rods should NOT be glued, as they need to remain removable for maintenance
- The two side panels must be glued to the part called “base sup1” using superglue to ensure a rigid structure
These fasteners help keep the structure properly aligned and ensure the system functions correctly
Here's a photo of the controller's electrical diagram. This is for the controller itself; each component will then be connected to one of the wires with a plug. Before closing up the system where the motor connects, make sure the polarity is correct so it rotates in the required direction! If you look at the controller board, there are two areas with pins; leave them as shown in the photo. The white potentiometer on the left is for adjusting the number of seconds the motor runs each time the sensor is activated. In my case, I turned it to the left until I calculated that it runs for about 2.5 seconds, with a maximum of 3 seconds per trigger

2️⃣ Installation in the sump
Once assembled, the roller should be installed in the sump inlet chamber, where water from the overflow enters the filtration system
The filter fleece will capture debris and particles while the motor automatically advances the roll when required
