Description

This is the improved V2 of my modular hair claw clip.

The idea is simple: instead of printing a full clip every time, you can keep the main spring clip and swap the claws when needed. This makes it easy to replace worn parts or change the style without reprinting the whole clip.

Compared to V1, this version has:

  • a more reliable claw attachment
  • better overall strength
  • improved usability

One small note: as with most 3D printed spring parts, the clip may lose some elasticity over time depending on the material used. When that happens, you can simply print and replace the clip body while keeping the claws.

I have already designed a few interchangeable clips:

  • a simple clip
  • a heart
  • a butterfly

The goal of this project is to expand the collection of clips over time.

If you have ideas for new designs, feel free to suggest them in the comments!
You can also design your own clips if you want.

To make this easier, I included the .STEP files of the clips, so anyone can modify them or create new ones compatible with the system.

I’m looking forward to seeing what people come up with!

Material

  • PLA (works well)
  • PETG recommended for better flexibility and durability

Layer Height

  • 0.2 mm recommended
  • 0.16 mm for better surface finish

Infill

  • 20–30 %

Walls

  • 3 perimeters recommended

Supports

  • Supports required for the clip not the claw

Orientation

  • Print the clip body flat on the bed
  • Claws is also printed flat

I've made a new version slightly thicker at the dovetail because over time it tended to unclip, there's only a 0.5mm difference so I don't think it harms the design, otherwise let me know

The print looks amazing, and it looked great in my daughters hair for 5 minutes before it came apart. I think the channel that it is used to hold the pieces together needs to be a bit more robust. deeper/wider perhaps?

Love these but the springy clip part fell out repeatedly. Going to try some superglue, but just mentioning that it might need to be a bit bigger piece where it is joined together. more overhang so it doesn’t pop out.

Awesome design! You could also share it in the community so more people can see it. You’ll even be able to join the Community Favorite Award contest.

printed the butterfly one. it didn't 'spring' back into place so held no hair in place. Was also hard to get onto the hair coz of the shape of the bottom half.
Strength Issue:doesn't 'spring' back
Other Issues:odd shape once together

Print is super good! Only issue I had to print the "spring" mechanism was intensely hard to get into it's slots. I recommend printing the mechanism at like 99% to fix the issue. Otherwise you will either need to sand a lot or will need to use a high quality large metal clamp to slowly slide it into it's slot, like I did. Also one other thing about the spring mechanism, it doesn't close exactly like a normal clip would. So is you have thicker hair I don't know if I would recommend this clip for that. It works for my thin hair just fine though. Just things to keep in mind before printing! But the design is so so cute and looks adorable on a holographic plate! Thank you so much for the design!

The idea is good but the clamp no longer clamps
