Description

🐾 Coton de Tulear

The Coton de Tulear is a charming and affectionate companion breed known for its soft, cloud-like coat and joyful personality. Originating from Madagascar, this small dog takes its name from the coastal city of Tulear (Toliara) and the word coton, referring to its cotton-like fur.

Historically favored by Malagasy nobility, the Coton de Tulear developed a reputation as a devoted companion with a playful spirit and gentle temperament. Today, the breed is cherished around the world for its friendly nature, expressive eyes, and lively character.

🐶 Appearance & Personality

Coat: Long, soft, and fluffy with a distinctive cotton-like texture. The coat is typically pure white but may occasionally have light gray, black, or tan markings, especially in puppies.

Build: Small, sturdy, and well-balanced. Despite their compact size, Cotons have a surprisingly resilient and agile frame.

Expression: Bright, alert, and cheerful. Their dark round eyes and slightly tilted head often give them an inquisitive and endearing look.

Temperament: Affectionate, playful, and highly people-oriented. The Coton de Tulear thrives on companionship and forms strong bonds with its family. They are known for their friendly nature, adaptability, and tendency to entertain their owners with playful antics.

🎾 Activity & Companionship

Coton de Tulears are lively but not overly demanding dogs.

They enjoy daily walks, playful games, and interactive time with their family.

Because of their affectionate nature, they prefer to be close to their people and may follow their owners from room to room.

They adapt well to apartment living and are happiest when included in everyday family activities.

💪 Health & Care

Exercise: Moderate — regular walks and playtime help keep them happy and healthy.

Coat care: Moderate to high — their long coat benefits from frequent brushing to prevent tangles and maintain its soft texture.

Diet: Balanced, high-quality nutrition supports coat health and overall well-being.

Health: Cotons typically live 14–16 years. They are generally healthy but may occasionally experience dental issues, hip problems, or eye conditions. Routine veterinary care and good dental hygiene are important.
