This bust represents Avicenna, or Ibn Sīnā, based on the most widespread representation in medieval Persian manuscripts. It is inspired by the most popular iconography of the philosopher and physician: serene face, scholarly turban, and a concentrated expression conveying intellectual thought.
The forms are simplified yet powerful, with particular attention paid to the gaze and the noble posture of the head. The sculptural treatment highlights the intellectual dimension of the figure, a major figure of the Islamic Golden Age.
Born in 980, Avicenna is the author of The Canon of Medicine, a reference work in Europe and the Middle East for several centuries. A philosopher influenced by Aristotle, he profoundly shaped medical, scientific, and metaphysical thought. This bust pays homage to one of the greatest minds in the history of science.
