SPIDER PRANK BOX 🕷️
This is my take on the legendary prank box, traditionally made of wood, now redesigned so you can 3D print it entirely at home without needing any additional materials.
Instead of the classic metal wire mechanism used to launch the spider, I designed a rack-and-pinion system that improves reliability and ensures smoother, more consistent motion. The result is a fully printable, optimized mechanism that works straight off the build plate.
🔧 Assembly Instructions
(I will include reference images for each step — please refer to them while assembling.)
1️⃣ Insert the lid
Slide the lid into the base structure using the integrated guide rails.

2️⃣ Install the gear and spider mechanism
Insert the spider into the arm connected to the gear, making sure it is oriented correctly.
Then insert the gear into position, aligning the second, third, and fourth teeth to the right of the spider with the three slots that extend down to the rack.
This alignment is essential to properly synchronize the motion of all parts, as designed.
(See reference image.)

3️⃣ Close the box
Attach the side panel using the snap-fit connectors.
⚠️Be very careful not to break the clips, do not force the closure.
My advice is to apply slight pressure to the box walls to help the pins slide into place more easily. Once inserted, they are not easy to remove.

Quick Update
After designing this in Fusion 360, inspired by the classic wooden prank boxes (you can also find on Amazon) , I discovered that another maker had already created a similar version.
However, the two designs differ in shape and in several engineering solutions. For fairness and transparency, I’m also linking his model and I want to compliment him on the great idea that, apparently, we both had independently!
