Description

This is the way I organize Root (base game) + The Riverfolk Expansion + The Underworld Expansion + The Clockwork Expansion into a single box.

The problem

When playing Root with multiple expansions, setup can take longer than necessary due to:

  • Distributing meeples
  • Sorting tokens
  • Searching for faction-specific cards
  • Making sure each player has exactly what they need

Additionally, transporting four separate boxes just to ensure all content is available isn’t the most practical solution.

My solution

With this system:

  • Each faction has its own independent module, easy to identify at a glance.
  • Each player receives a single box containing all their meeples, tokens, and necessary components in seconds.
  • Setup and teardown are reduced to minutes.
  • All modules share the same height, creating a flat surface where the 2 maps, 14 faction boards, and rulebooks rest securely.
  • All listed content is transported inside one single box, remaining stable and organized.
  • Dedicated space remains for dice, suit markers, ferry, tower, and bot priority tokens.

Faction Modules

The system includes one module per faction, covering the 8 included in the mentioned content:

Base game:

  • Vagabond
  • Marquise
  • Alliance
  • Eyrie

Underworld:

  • Duchy
  • Corvids

Riverfolk:

  • Riverfolk
  • Lizards

Externally, the boxes maintain a symmetrical aesthetic.

Internally, each one is adjusted to match the actual volume of meeples and tokens required by its faction.

Both the box and lid are marked with the silhouette of the corresponding faction’s meeple, allowing quick identification without opening it.

Each player simply takes their module and has everything needed to begin the game (excluding cards).

Card Holders

The system includes 4 card holders.

The largest one is marked with rabbit, fox, and mouse silhouettes and stores the general suit deck.

The remaining 3 are smaller and stack together to optimize vertical space:

  • Vagabond silhouette → Quests and Vagabond cards
  • Duchy and Eyrie silhouettes → Cards for both factions
  • Gears silhouettes → Clockwork (bots) cards

This allows you to:

  • Easily extract the general deck
  • Keep faction-specific cards organized
  • Access the necessary cards immediately depending on the factions in play
  • Avoid mixing content used only in specific game modes

General Components

Once the faction modules and card holders are placed inside the base box, the remaining space perfectly fits the world components:

  • Dice
  • Ferry
  • Tower
  • Blocked paths
  • Map markers (suits and bot priority)

The arrangement can be replicated by following the photos.

Items are stored inside the Vagabond module, since they are only used when that faction is in play.

Maps, boards, and rulebooks

Because all modules and card holders share the same height, they create a flat internal surface.

On top of this surface, place in order:

  1. Maps
  2. Faction boards
  3. Rulebooks

They remain stable and fully contained inside the base box along with the rest of the system.

If you have suggestions, improvements, or adaptations you would like to share, I’m always open to feedback. The goal is for this system to continue growing and evolving over time. As I expand my collection, I plan to update the design to incorporate additional expansions.
