Bun Cage Hair Accessory – 3D Printed

This model is a lightweight “bun cage” hair accessory: a perforated hemispherical cup that holds your hair bun, combined with two long sticks that lock everything in place. The fine lattice structure gives it a delicate, jewelry-like look while still being strong enough for everyday wear.

The cage itself is printed as a thin shell with a dense pattern of tiny holes. This keeps the part very light and lets light and air pass through – it even works as a small decorative light dome if you shine an LED through it. The rim is slightly thicker to add stiffness and to prevent the lattice from deforming when you push the sticks through.

Two matching sticks slide through the side openings of the cage and cross each other behind the bun. They are slightly tapered so they go through tight but smooth, holding the bun securely without sharp edges that could damage hair.

Printing notes

  • Designed to print in two parts:
    • 1× bun cage (hemisphere with perforation)
    • 2× hair sticks
  • Print the cage flat on the build plate with the rim down; no support needed for the perforation.
  • Layer height: 0.16–0.20 mm works well for a good balance of detail and print time.
  • 2–3 perimeters and 10–15% infill are sufficient because the geometry is mostly shell.
  • Recommended materials: PLA for a rigid, lightweight accessory; PETG or similar if you want more flexibility and better heat resistance (e.g. hot summer days in the car).
  • After printing, lightly deburr the holes around the rim if necessary so the sticks slide smoothly.

Use different filament colors or silk/pearlescent filaments to match outfits – the lattice pattern catches the light beautifully and creates a very elegant effect in the hair.
