Are the spaces between the tires supposed to be wider in the front or back? Making sure I'm using the right axle when building it.

Yeah, sorry I forgot to tell that rear tyres are wider, just like on a real F1 bolide

the slots were too small so the side panels did not fit and had to be trimmed
