Assembly and Use Instructions:

  • Print the plates in order. Assemble them from largest pieces to smallest pieces.
  • The individual layers should be threaded onto the stem with the tab towards the rectangle stopper. Make sure the tabs are nested into the grooves.
  • Place the topper (has a rounded dome shape in the center) onto the stem. If it is loose and moves freely, you will need to add a drop of glue to keep it on. (see tips for more details).
  • To make it move, gently twist it back and forth between your fingers (see the gif image for the model). Rough shaking or twisting can cause it to break.
  • Use the base to display your whirligig. I do not recommend gluing the base on because it can (depending on the model) get in the way of where the hand needs to go.

A couple of tips:

  1. Good bed adhesion is important for this print. I recommend using a smooth PEI plate or effects plate.
  2. Make sure the plate is cool before removing the layers. If they bend, they won't spin as well.
  3. The individual layers and stem can warp if there is a draft or poor bed adhesion. Please check each set of circles BEFORE you glue anything.
  4. Depending on the filament you use, and how accurate your printer is, you might need to use a de-burring tool or sand paper to slightly shave down the stem where the propellers rest.
  5. If your filament is stringy due to humidity (or poor quality) you'll need to use a round file to smooth out the grooves for the stem and propellers.
  6. If you need to use a drop of glue to attach the topper. DO NOT get any glue on the top set of circles.
  7. Make sure to leave about a paper width of space between the top propeller and the topper. If you don't, it won't spin.
  8. If there is too much space (more than 2mm) between the top most layer and the cap, print one more individual layer. Too much space between the topper and the individual layers can lead to improper spin and breakage.
  9. I have added a brim to the stem to help with bed adhesion.
  10. Due to humidity, machine accuracy and tolerances, and filament brand, you might find the need to add or remove a set of circles to get this toy to work properly. The circles should spin freely without jumping out of the grooves.

Disclaimers:

  • This toy contains small parts that may pose a choking hazard. It is not intended for young children, or for people who may put non-food items into their mouth.
  • This toy is NOT designed for young children. The pieces are thin and can easily bend or break with rough play. You can print it in a sturdier filament if you want too, but please do not give me low rating because it broke after you let a young one play with it. It only needs a gentle twist motion to get it to work. If you're rough with it, it will break.
