Saladin - Ṣalāḥ ad-Dīn Yūsuf ibn Ayyūb — Bust

This bust depicts Ṣalāḥ ad-Dīn Yūsuf ibn Ayyūb, known in the West as Saladin, in a faithful sculptural interpretation inspired by the most widely recognized historical portrayal of him. His calm and thoughtful face, framed by a long structured beard and characteristic headwear, conveys the wisdom and restraint associated with his legacy.
The volumes are deliberately emphasized to clearly express his defining features: the deep gaze, pronounced nose, and vertical facial structure. The sculptural approach favors readability while preserving personality and natural asymmetry.
🏛️ The historical figure
Ṣalāḥ ad-Dīn Yūsuf ibn Ayyūb (1137-1193) founded the Ayyubid dynasty and became one of the most important leaders of the medieval Middle East. He is best known for recapturing Jerusalem in 1187 during the Crusades and for his reputation as an honorable leader respected by both allies and enemies.
This bust aims to capture the iconic image of the chivalrous ruler as conveyed through the most popular historical representations.
