The Sleepless Warden Medallion

It was found on a heavy oak workbench, among scattered powders, worn-out books, and cracked vials.

It lay among ordinary objects, as if someone had hastily removed it from their neck… and never returned.

In daylight, it appears almost unremarkable.
Its setting of gold and darkened bronze bears the marks of time, as though it had spent years brushing against cloak fabric and human skin.
The rim is cut by irregular fractures - as if the material could no longer withstand the strain of something sealed within.

These are not decorations.
They are marks of pressure.

According to notes discovered nearby:

“Wear it around your neck in the light of day.
Do not hide it beneath your cloak.
It must drink the sun.”

The medallion should be worn openly throughout the day.
Not as an ornament - but as a vessel.

The central structure is not stone.
It is not glass.
It is a substance that absorbs light slowly, patiently - as if committing it to memory.

It charges in silence.
And after dusk, it releases what it has gathered.
That is when it reveals its true nature.

Its glow is not light in the ordinary sense.
It is the residue of day, awakened by night.

From the recovered notes, it appears the medallion does not repel bad dreams.
It captures them.

The heavy ones.
The foreign ones.
Those that do not belong to the dreamer.

And the fractures along its rim… are said to widen with every nightmare it intercepts.
As if something inside is constantly trying to break free.

When it shines more brightly, it is known to have drawn in greater energy for its task.
The stronger its glow - the darker the dreams it can hold that night.

No one knows whether the medallion neutralizes what it captures.
Or merely keeps it contained.

By dawn, its light weakens.
As though exhausted from the struggle, it slowly fades with the first hint of morning.

And then it falls silent once more.
Waiting for another day.
And another night.

In 1603, scholars began to understand the strange glow of certain stones.
Yet long before it was given a name, light had already been known to illuminate more than the dark - it was said to brighten the mind and reveal hidden paths.
