Description

3D Printed Origami - The Tsuru

You won't believe this is 3D printed. I’ve designed a way to print a super-thin sheet with built-in crease lines that functions exactly like real paper. It creates a perfect origami bird that flaps, is waterproof, impossible to tear, and incredibly satisfying to fold.

Design & Concept:

The concept is simple but surprisingly technical. Instead of printing a solid object, I created a thin, flexible sheet with "crease lines" engineered directly into the mesh. These pre-made grooves guide your folds, making the process easier than traditional origami while ensuring the final shape is crisp. The result is a model that looks like delicate paper but has the resilience of rubber.

Key Features:

  • Waterproof & Durable: Unlike paper, this bird can be submerged in water or handled without tearing.
  • Pre-Creased Guide: The geometry includes fold lines, so you know exactly where to bend the material.
  • Zero Waste: Prints as a single flat layer (mostly), using very little filament.
  • Interactive: Once folded, you can pull the tail to make the wings flap, just like the classic paper version.

Hardware Required:

  • None. Just your printer and the right filament.

Printing Recommendations:

  • Material: TPU (Flexible Filament) is better.
    • NB You can use PLA or PETG but thay could break.
  • Layer Height: 0.1mm (Standard).
  • Infill: 100% (Since it is a thin sheet, it should be solid).
  • First Layer: Ensure your Z-offset is perfect. A smooth first layer equals a better-looking "paper" finish.

Folding Instructions: Once printed, remove the sheet from the plate and let it cool. Follow the visual guide below to fold your Flapping Bird.

  1. Start: Place the textured/colored side up and follow the arrows.
  2. Base: Create the "Square Base" and then the "Bird Base".
  3. Finish: Fold the head and tail as shown in the diagram.
  4. Action: To make it flap, hold the front of the chest and pull the tail gently!
