📜 History of the Combat Infantry Badge

The Combat Infantry Badge was established on October 27, 1943, during World War II by the United States Army under the direction of Army leadership including General George C. Marshall. Its purpose was simple but profound: to recognize the infantryman—the Soldier who closes with and destroys the enemy in direct ground combat.

At the time, infantry Soldiers endured some of the harshest and most dangerous conditions of the war, often with little public recognition compared to other branches. The badge was created both to boost morale and to formally acknowledge the unique hardships and personal courage required of infantrymen.

The badge’s design carries deep symbolism:

  • Musket (Model 1795 Springfield): Represents the infantry’s core role as the Army’s primary fighting force
  • Blue background: The traditional branch color of infantry since 1858
  • Wreath: Symbolizes honor, achievement, and victory in combat

To earn the Combat Infantry Badge, a Soldier must be an infantryman assigned to an infantry unit actively engaged in ground combat and must personally be present under hostile fire. It remains one of the most respected and meaningful awards a Soldier can receive.

Often referred to simply as “the CIB,” it represents more than qualification—it represents the shared hardship, sacrifice, and brotherhood of those who have made “the long walk” toward the sound of battle.
