Hey there! :)

You know I design lots of hairpins, and they're cute and all, but I've been planning to design an easier, more versatile hair accessory for quite some time. Claw clips are one of those that I like a lot personally, since they're very forgiving for any hair type, and you can do lots of hairstyles with just one clip. But I wasn't quite sure about them since they contain a non-printable mechanical component: a torsion spring.

This spring became the pain of my existence since I couldn't modify it to be printable and strong enough. Also, apparently, the spring suitable for hairclips is not commonly used in other industries, and they're not commonly sold on consumer websites. Also, if it's such a disaster to find the perfect one, wouldn't it be easier to just.. buy the whole clip online?🥲

So I went on a mission to design a claw clip so pretty that it's worth facing this spring ordeal, and meanwhile, to find the most suitable torsion spring to introduce to you all. So my design is inspired by a Luna Moth, and my idea was to design it as a mini claw clip to be perfect for half-up hair styles, so it looks like a real-life moth sitting on your hair. ✨

The spring torsion that finally worked for my design, had a set of characteristics that I couldn't really find in any other industrial spring. This is the seller I got my spring from for this design, and I guess anything similar that you have could also work fine, just pay attention to the length and angle of the spring. (Pay attention that by choosing smaller and thinner springs, your final claw clip will also have a weaker grasp)

Print Notes:

  • This design comes in two profiles: one with skulls, and the other without. Download your preferred version! :)
  • Ensure to print with the orientation set in the profile, since it actually matters for the strength of the final pieces.
  • Quality: Print with 0.12 or 0.16 mm layer heights and change the seam position to the nearest.
  • Strength: Change the wall loops to 6 and sparse infill to 0%.
  • Support: Enable the support generation, but for critical regions only.
  • Others: Since the design is thin and prone to detaching from the build plate, set a lot of outer brim to be generated, about 10 to 12 mm is enough.

Assembly:

  • After carefully cleaning the design, use this guide to build the claw clip. You can also watch this video!

I hope you get to build and enjoy this! Also, if you have any suggestions about the spring, feel free to let me know in the comments! :)

Happy printing! 🥂✨
